When it comes to movie-going experiences, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a strong first impression, according to a new survey.
While a majority of Canadians had an opinion about the upcoming movie, more than half said it was the most enjoyable of the four new Star Wars movies.
A majority of respondents also said they had seen the original Star Wars trilogy.
The survey was conducted by Insights West and found that the overall sentiment was “overwhelmingly positive” about the movie.
About 20 per cent of respondents said the movie had a negative effect on them, while another 10 per cent said they were “not sure” what they liked or disliked about it.
It was the second consecutive year InsightsWest polled Canadians and this time they asked respondents their overall impression of the movies overall quality.
More than half of those surveyed said they thought the original trilogy had an overall good or excellent score, while a majority said the sequel had an “overall” good or outstanding score.
A minority of respondents felt Star Wars was “poor” and “average,” but a third said they felt it had a good overall score.
Star Wars, which opens Friday, has had a tumultuous start to the Star Wars canon, with a number of films being cut down or scrapped, while the franchise’s long-awaited reboot has struggled to find its footing.
The film has also been a major topic of discussion in Canada and around the world since the release of the first Star Wars film in 1977.
Insights’ survey of 3,938 Canadians, who were asked their overall impressions of the films Star Wars The Force Unleashed, The Force: Unleashed, Star of Tomorrow, The Clone Wars and the upcoming Star Wars sequel, also found that Canadians generally believe the franchise has improved over the years.
More: Insights Western Canada is the largest region in the country and the majority of people said they liked the original series better than the spin-off films.
But the vast majority of those polled said they still didn’t believe they could watch the original movies in their entirety, with only 17 per cent saying they could.
While some respondents said they preferred the original films to the new ones, a majority (60 per cent) felt the new films were better overall, the survey found.
“It is clear that the original Force Unleashed had a positive and positive effect on Canadians, but its legacy has been tainted by its negative reception,” said Insights Canada president, Dr. Christine Lathouris.
“Despite its positive reviews and strong reviews, some of its best elements have been overshadowed by its less-than-stellar second half.
Star of the future is a great first film, but the sequel is a mess.”
Star Wars fans who were born in the 1970s and 1980s are among those who said they weren’t happy with the second Star Wars movie, while Star Wars Rebels fans said they enjoyed the first one.
Insists: A lot of people have moved on and are moving on to other projects and films Insights asked people whether they were happy with their Star Wars experience, but they were more likely to say they were not happy about the new movie than they were the original movie.
Only two per cent responded that they were neither happy nor not happy with either movie, with 28 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively, expressing no opinion.
Insiders also asked people if they thought it was important for fans to see the films that came before, including the films in the original line-up and the Clone Wars.
A substantial number of people, 42 per cent in fact, said it should be.
“I think it’s a bit unfair to have to watch them before the first two,” said Jennifer Beaudoin, a 26-year-old from Windsor, Ont.
“We’ve got to watch it to see what’s going on, and I think it should make it a bit easier for people to see them.
I think if it’s just one film, it should really be the first movie.”
Beaudin said she was disappointed that some people were having to wait more than two years for a new Star of The Future, a film that would have come out at the same time as the original.
InsightWest CEO and president, Michael DeGraffenreid, said the survey indicates “strong support” for Insights’s research and that there is a lot of room for improvement.
“Star Wars fans and others in Canada are really eager for a good film,” he said.
“They’re hungry for a big franchise like this.
They know Star Wars is going to be the best in the galaxy.”
Insights did not ask respondents about what they thought of the current state of the franchise.
The new Star War films, however, will not be available to purchase on Netflix, which has already said it will not release any new Star Force films.
